How Retail Pharmacies Can Evaluate Product Margins Without Guesswork

A product with a high printed discount or an attractive purchase price is not automatically the most profitable item for a pharmacy. Retailers need to consider actual landed cost, realised selling price, stock rotation, expiry exposure and any applicable commercial conditions.

Start with the real purchase cost

Calculate the effective cost after confirmed discounts and eligible schemes, and include freight or other direct costs where relevant. Record the terms in writing and make sure any scheme conditions are understood before including them in your calculation.

Calculate gross margin consistently

A simple formula is: Gross margin percentage = (Net selling price − landed cost) ÷ net selling price × 100. Keep this distinct from markup, which is calculated using cost as the denominator. Use the same tax treatment and cost basis when comparing products.

Example—not a market quote

If a product's landed cost is ₹80 and its net selling price is ₹100, the gross profit is ₹20 and gross margin is 20%. This is a hypothetical calculation only; actual prices, discounts, taxes and permitted selling prices depend on the specific product and applicable rules.

Include stock rotation and expiry risk

A product that earns a larger margin per pack may sell slowly, require more working capital or carry higher expiry risk. Compare the expected profit from stock that actually sells with the losses and costs associated with unsold inventory.

Compare products within the right category

For example, when evaluating paracetamol products, compare like with like: brand, strength, dosage form, pack size, purchase terms, lawful selling price and demand. Do not assume one brand or pack offers the best margin without current, verified commercial data.

Check compliance before purchasing

Purchase medicines only through authorised and compliant channels, verify required licences and documentation, and follow applicable prescription, storage, labelling and pricing rules. Never choose a medicine for its margin over patient safety or professional judgement.

Use a simple comparison sheet

For each SKU, record supplier, pack size, invoice cost, confirmed discount, landed cost, net selling price, gross margin, monthly units sold, days in stock and near-expiry exposure. Review the sheet monthly and flag products whose margins look strong but turnover is weak.

Questions to ask your distributor

Ask whether a quoted price is current, what conditions apply to any scheme, how returns and near-expiry issues are handled, what documentation is supplied and when the next replenishment is expected. Compare the full offer rather than one headline discount.

How Chirag Remedies can help

Retailers can contact Chirag Remedies to discuss current product availability and applicable trade terms. Product-specific prices, schemes and margins should always be confirmed with a current quotation and invoice; this article does not claim that any particular brand or medicine has the highest margin.

Closing thought

The goal is sustainable, compliant profitability—not the biggest discount on paper. Compare landed cost, sales velocity, expiry risk and service reliability before deciding what to reorder.
